The legislation has been passed in four American states and Washington, D.C, allowing SDC's with the state of Nevada being the first to permit the operation on June. 29, 2011. The SDC's went in operation in Nevada on March. 1, 2012, and the State's Department of Motor Vehicles issued the first license for an autonomous car in May 2012, to a "Toyota Prius" with Google's experimental driverless technology mods.
Florida state became the second state to allow the testing of Google SDC's'- California became the third state- then came along Michigan in December 2013 becoming the fourth state to allow SDC'S on public roads. The city of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho made provisions to allow SDC's in July 2014.
Google SDC's have about $150k in equipment including a $70k sensor designed to detect objects as far as two football fields away in all directions, including pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles- or even fluttering plastic bags and birds. A software called Google Chauffeur processes all the information to help the car safely navigate the road without getting tired or distracted.
